Summer Break

Posted in Uncategorized, Miscellaneous by thedictionpolice on July 7th, 2012

My apologies for not being better about posting over the last month--I've been so swamped with several concerts, work and buying an apartment that I just haven't been able to get anything else accomplished. I did try desperately to get a Special Edition ready, but nothing ever worked out and since the Semperoper season ends tomorrow and Miss Kitty Fantastico and I are headed off to coach at several summer programs, I've been forced to give up. But The Diction Police will be back at the end of August with all new episodes!

English Diction: Pronunciation Shifts in Singing

Posted in Miscellaneous, English Diction, Worksheet Downloads by thedictionpolice on April 17th, 2012

Canadian baritone and diction specialist Jason Nedecky put together this worksheet on the vowel shifts between American Standard English (AS) and British Received Pronunciation (RP). The last page includes the consonant-related shifts--medial T and D, initial WH words and the J-glide words. He uses the Canadian flag vs the British flag to differentiate between AS and RP. Please feel free to download and use in your studies!

Thank you, Jason!

Here is the pdf file with hand drawings of each of the tongue exercises that Silke Kurpiers gave us in Episodes 48 and 49. We're planning to make an accompanying YouTube video so that you can see the exercises in action--I'll add that link to this blog posting as soon as we get it up!

This Opera Life with Charles Reid

Posted in Miscellaneous by thedictionpolice on September 21st, 2011

I've posted several times about This Opera Life with Charles Reid on the Facebook page--tenor Charles Reid's podcast is an interview show, talking with performers in the business about how they began and how their careers developed, sharing stories from the opera world and personal experiences.

If you haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, this is your chance, because for this week's episode he interviewed ME! It will be posted sometime today, so in the meantime, check out his previous interviews with some singers and conductors from all over the globe, including the Metropolitan Opera and Bayreuth Festspiel. You can listen to episodes directly from the website, or it's also available free from iTunes.

For everyone in the Boston Area: Unfortunately, due to the volcanic eruption, I can't get to the States until Monday, so we've had to cancel the Boston NATS Master Class. We're trying to reschedule for next year. I'm so sorry for the inconvenience!
